Replacing timber handles
Axe handle replacement
helpful hints for fitting handles to tools correctly
- Ensure the correctly sized handle is obtained in accordance with the standard shoulder, taper and eye size of the particular tool
- Do not burn broken handles from tool heads. It may destroy the metal temper.
- When fitting hammer and axe handles, be sure the head is seated right onto the shoulder of the handle to ensure perfect balance.
- Some hardwoods are not suitable for wedges. A softwood wedge can be driven right into the split and remain more securely fixed. Added security will be gained by driving in two steel wedges across the wooden wedge.
- If it is not possible to accurately determine correct handle size by looking at the end of a handled hammer. Hammers are usually made smaller in the centre of the eye so the handle can be wedged securely. The handle must drive through the smaller eye centre and be flared out by wedge, thus locking it in the tool.
- Always check that the handle is firmly fitted in the tool head before use.
